Let’s shine the spotlight on Zoitsa Homely Produce’s – Burrito Seasoning!
Yes, yes, here she goes on another tangent about Mexican food, more so Tex-Mex food. I know there is a million other cuisines I could go down, but I really, like REALLY love Tex-Mex food. I can’t pinpoint exactly why but the colours, the smells, the spices, the tastes, the vegetables, the beans just leave me with… gastronomic pleasure.
I’m sure there a lot of people thinking that Mexican seasonings all taste the same. SHRIEK stop right there! I disagree. Blasphemous! No, no, no just STOP. Both taco and burrito seasoning (or Spice Mixes) have similar ingredients, but they are honestly not the same. Taco seasonings have more a “flowery” taste as opposed to Burrito Seasoning which is a lot more “earthy”. The flavour notes are not the same at all.
So, let’s talk about the difference between a taco and a burrito. For starters, a burrito commonly consists of a flour tortilla, and they are filled with savoury ingredients a “meat” like chicken, beef or pork along with cooked rice, cooked or refried beans, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese and then sauces such as salsa, pico de gallo, guacamole and sour cream. Whereas a taco is usually a hard shelled tortilla filled with seasoned ground beef , cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, salsa, guacamole/avocado and sour cream. Similar… but different. Tacos are also a lot smaller in comparison to a burrito.
Then the question is a soft taco the same as a burrito? I say no. A burrito is always wrapped and bundled up tightly, yet a taco is always an “open” shell whether it be soft or hard.
When reading up on recipes I noticed that in Australia a taco seasoning and a burrito seasoning were always classed as one and the same thing, which made me scream in sheer horror! Yes, there are commonalities but the two are not the same.
When looking at the packet ingredients of Burrito Seasoning that is found on the major Mexican food company you will find in all major supermarkets around Australia (I can’t mention names but hazard a guess if you will) their ingredients reads as follows: Maize Flour, Salt, Paprika, Pinto Bean Flour (9%), Onion, Cumin, Garlic (3.5%), Oregano, Red Capsicum, Black Pepper, Food Acid (Citric Acid), Chili (1%), Coriander, Anticaking Agent (Silicon Dioxide), Colour (Paprika Extract), Flavour.
Whereas Zoitsa Homely Produce’s Burrito Seasoning consists of: Cumin, Smoked Paprika, Garlic Powder, Chilli Powder, Dried Oregano, Salt and Black Pepper. That’s all there is in our packaging. We add absolutely no colours, no preservatives, no anti caking agents, no silicon dioxide, no food (citric) acid.
Let me delve a little deeper into our ingredients. We have added cumin as cumin has a wonderful earthy element. Smoked paprika for that smokiness and for colour. Garlic powder because everything always tastes darn amazing with garlic but more, so garlic powder has a subtle bitter yet sweet flavour and a strong aroma. Chilli powder for that touch of heat and vibrant colour, oregano with its slightly bitter yet earthy pungent flavour and lastly salt and pepper for the final flavours to POP!
Our Burrito Seasoning is a rich smoky, earthy blend that will bring the Tex-Mex tastes and aroma to life! Mild in heat but packing a burst of flavour!
Our Burrito Seasoning is available in 4 sizes : 50 grams, 100 grams, 150 grams and 200 grams
