Chicken Salt

Its here! Its landed! Its Zoitsa Homely Produces version of Chicken Salt and damn its good!

I made my own version of Chicken Salt many moons ago and I have teased and teased all my family and friends and you my blog readers with the: Stay tuned its coming spiel…And here it is.

It’s taken me so long to put this in our store as I wanted to really perfect my original recipe.  In turn I decided that I would offer two versions of our Chicken Salt.  One is using real chicken flavouring and the other is our vegan version. Let me elaborate when I say “chicken flavouring” …. Chicken flavouring is real roasted, braised and dried chicken.  Our Vegan version has been made using Zoitsa Homely Produce’s Vegan Chicken Stock.  Either version is magnificent.  Do they taste the same? Hmmm not really.  Personally, I feel that the Vegan version tastes a bit more” nuttier” due to the nutritional yeast in our Vegan Chicken Stock. I have to say though, I do love both of our versions equally.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with chicken salt sit down, put your feet up and read on.

Chicken Salt was created in Gawler, Adelaide in the early 70’s by a chicken shop owner named Peter Brinkworth.  Mr Brinkworth created the seasoning to season his roast chickens in his shop.  In 1979 Mr Brinkworth was approached by The Mitani Family who bought the shop off him along with the Chicken Saltrecipe.  In time, The Mitani Family began selling the Chicken Salt recipe to other fast food joints and being that it is bloody fantastic it was branched out and sold in supermarkets.  The Mitani Family brand is still readily available in stores and online.

Chicken Salt is Australian and as iconic as Vegemite.  We sprinkle it on anything and everything.  I guess it’s safe to say that is Australia’s version of an Umami bomb and man it goes off!

I don’t only use our Chicken Salt on hot chips, but I love to use it on a roast chicken (olive oil rub and then rub in some chicken salt), but I also use it on popcorn, as a dry rub on chicken/faux chicken, potato bakes, roast vegetables, turns bland pumpkin into a killer pumpkin! I also use it, and this might shock some, is that I use it in my steamed rice.  Rice essentially has no flavour.  For me rice is a vehicle that carries sauces, herbs and spices, to add flavour.  I sprinkle some in my rice water let it cook with the rice.  The taste is out of this world.  My hubby and I plan on using it as cocktail rim on a Bloody Mary this weekend (I will keep you posted on that outcome).

I read that not only is Chicken Salt iconic in Australia, but the Americans have jumped on ship and love the stuff.  Who can blame them right?  It has somehow found its way to the US shores, and it has taken the country by storm.  They love the stuff as much as we do!

As the name reads: Chicken Salt. So be aware it is salty (but so damn good).

Available now in: pouches, jars and cylinders.

I have used it for chicken soup, roasted chicken, chicken schnitzels in the bread crumps.
Its a seasoning that really brings out the flavor of the chicken without being overly salty.
Right balance and beautiful flavor! One of my top choices!

What a wonderful idea putting it in your chicken schnitzel crumbs! I must try that. Thanks so much for your kind words.
