Everything Bagel Seasoning

Zoitsa Homely Produce would like to introduce you to our version of…. Everything Bagel Seasoning.

It’s just 6 delicious basic everyday ingredients that come together to create this magic blend.  I guess it’s safe to say that there is a lot of talk about this seasoning blend.  I’d say because it’s so delicious and works well on so many foods not just bagels.  It makes my heart smile when 6 everyday ingredients come together so well and just work! Nothing posh. Nothing fancy shmancy.  Nothing you can’t find on a supermarket shelf.  Just 6 simple ingredients that when combined together taste so phenomenal and just work so well together.

White sesame seeds, black sesame seeds, dried onion flakes, dried garlic flakes, poppy seeds, and flaked sea salt.  That’s all it is!  But man, it’s so good.

Everything Bagel Seasoning is to die for on avocado toast, eggs, salads, salmon, cream cheese, sandwiches, roast vegetables, homemade pizzas, popcorn, sushi, it tastes great on everything!

The sesame seeds and poppy seeds give it such a nutty flavour with a crispy crunch to it.  The sea salt flakes bring out the complex flavours and the dried onion and garlic flakes just give it more OOMPH.  Everything tastes good (in my opinion) with onion and garlic!

A lot of background work went into making our version of Everything Bagel Seasoning.  I noted that when I initially made it with using just regular table salt it tended to really sink to the bottom of the jar.  I tried it with Kosher salt, rock salt and Himalayan salt but it was too chunky, and I was terrified someone might break a tooth on it.  The granules on those salts are quite hard and big.  My last attempt was using Sea Salt Flakes and ta da it all just came together so beautifully.  The sea salt flakes add the right texture and crunch to the blend as they so light and crispy.

Researching Everything Bagel Seasoning (remember… I am a nerd who loves to read cookbooks and likes to know the when, whys, who’s and how’s of things).  Well let me tell you, I was taken on a wild adventure.  Here I was thinking it will be some random chef coming up with the idea.  But to my dismay I fell into a controversy of sorts.

The story goes (and this is the short version may I add) that there are 4 major key players who all stake claim to inventing this gorgeous seasoning.  Dude number 1 , a Mr David Gussin,  claims he invented this seasoning back in 1980.  He states that: “I was cleaning out the oven, I was sweeping out the seeds. Instead of throwing them out, I swept them out into a bin. The next day, I said to Charlie, ‘Hey, Charlie, instead of throwing them away, put this on a bagel and call it the “everything.”‘” 

Then we have Dude Number 2- Mr Seth Godin, who states that he worked in a bagel factory back in 1977 and he came up with the everything bagel.

Dude Number 3-  American restaurateur and MasterChef Host Mr Joe Bastianich claimed in his 2012 memoir that he invented the everything bagel seasoning as his first job was working at a place called The Bagel Den in Bayside, Queens NYC.

Then last but not least …. Dude Number 4 – A Mr. Brandon Steiner a sports executive, author, and media personality. In his 2016 blog post simply titled “I Invented The Everything Bagel”, he tells his childhood tale of delivering newspapers, along with bagels and milk. The bagel store owner then hired Steiner as a part-time baker, and during one shift he experimented with the toppings and had the idea to “throw all the toppings on a bagel at once.” This idea came to him in 1973, which to his knowledge, is the earliest stake in everything bagel history.

I can’t blame them for arguing amongst each other as Everything Bagel is a damn fine, versatile and delicious seasoning.  Clearly, it was made within the last 50 odd years but personally for me I hadn’t seen it, tasted or heard about it until the “Avocado Toast” trend.  I was one of those people that jumped on the bandwagon when I first saw Avocado toast on a menu.  I became rather addicted to Avo Toast. I still am.  It’s my Sunday morning breakfast.  My family knows not to speak to me until AFTER I have had my Avo Toast with Everything Bagel Seasoning and my double shot, ½ sugar latte.  I bite otherwise! 

Truly though our Everything Bagel Seasoning is super duper beautiful.  I know you will love it as much as we do.

Our version of Everything Bagel is Vegan, Vegetarian, Low Fodmap, Keto Friendly and Gluten Free.  Sorry to our Paleo friends but you gotta skip this blend.

We use no animal products.

    I have started adding this to the cornflakes crumbs I use to crumb my chicken schnitzel. They look more exciting now with the black and white sesame seeds, and taste is more rounded with the seasonings. Yummo.
