German Gingerbread Spice Mix

Let’s say hello to our German Gingerbread Spice Mix, which is also known as Lebkuchengewurz.

For those of you who know about this spice …you KNOW. For those of you who don’t it is an extremely vibrant and aromatic and full of flavour gingerbread spice mix.

German Gingerbread Spice Mix is traditionally used around the Christmas season. My research tells me that if in Germany and visiting the famous Christmas markets you will find and smell it all around you.

It has so much depth and complexity of flavours and there is nothing in comparison. It’s truly a unique flavour. Nothing compares to it! It’s sort of spicy yet sweet at the same time.  It is traditionally used around the Christmas Season in Germany to make their delicious Lebkuchen (traditional German cookies given as gifts at Christmas time – very similar to gingerbread) and Pffeffernusse (small circular spice cookies which are available in supermarkets in Australia at Christmas).

I use this spice mix a lot in my baking but not at Christmas time. I tend to use this during wintertime in my baking as I find that the spices used really “warm” you up.  It’s a firm favourite in my home when The Hubster and I feel like a Gingerbread Martini. It is INSANE on roast pumpkin and delicious in a plain vanilla cake. I have also added some in melted chocolate to make my chocolate coated strawberries a bit more “adult”.  It’s a bit posh when you add some to melted chocolate and then make chocolate dipped pretzels. Very posh on a charcuterie board.

The spices we use to make our German Gingerbread Spice Mix are cinnamon, cloves, ginger, allspice, star anise, mace, nutmeg, coriander, and cardamom. I aim to use whole spices where I can, and I then mill them down to a fine consistency.

A little goes a long way with this spice mix, and I hope you love iot as much as we do!

Guten Appetit!/ Mahlzeit!/Bon Appetit

I love to make hot chocolate kits for workmates around Christmas time. This year I added some of your German Gingerbread Spice Mix to give it a new twist and it has been amazing. Thanks for putting this one together.
