Four simple ingredients merge together to make our House Seasoning. Salt. Pepper. Garlic Powder. Onion Powder. That’s it!
I came up with this seasoning as I wanted my food to be well seasoned, but I wanted the nuttiness yet buttery flavour of garlic along with the sweet and savoury flavour of onion.
Garlic, whether it be in powder form, granulated or fresh is essential in all my cooking. As a young child from Greek migrants, my mother would load up our meals with garlic. I recall both my late mum and my dad (still to this day) eating whole raw garlic cloves. I remember thinking (and smelling) nothing but disgust. Not to mention the next day’s aftereffects.
When I started cooking, I would refuse to add garlic as I had flashbacks of my youth and hated the stuff. Then I began to add a little bit of garlic here and there and I slowly became a fan. I now love garlic and there isn’t a meal that I won’t add it to.
Garlic powder is a reliable seasoning, meaning it adds so much flavour and depth to your foods. Garlic powder is the most used seasoning behind salt and pepper.
With regards to onion powder, I feel that it adds more flavour to your dishes that you just can’t get from fresh onions.
What I wanted it to taste like and what the outcome was, was simply exemplary. Getting the balance right with our House Seasoning was really tricky. Yes, it’s only four ingredients but I didn’t want it too peppery, and I didn’t want it too salty. I didn’t want one flavour to taste stronger or more overpowering than the other. In my head I wanted the flavours to mesh, and I believe I’ve done it.
Our House Seasoning is one that I use a lot in my cooking, and it is a wonderful companion in your kitchen. All that you need is a teaspoon of it sprinkled in your dish as you are cooking to really amp up your dish.
