Who would have thought that there would ever be a National Burger Day? I, for one, had never heard of it, and yet here we are… Tuesday 28th May is National Burger Day!
When I first heard about this national day, I automatically assumed that it was just an “American” thing as I know that Americans eat a lot of burgers. Burgers or hamburgers are iconic in the States. I started reading up about it and was utterly surprised that this national day is also “celebrated” in Australia.
Even after all my research I am still left scratching my head and thinking why on earth would we celebrate this?
In America, they have 50 cent burgers available and its HUGE day for them. Big commercial chains like your McDonalds, Burger King, White Castle have huge sales. What is absolutely positively hilarious to me is that there is a hashtag for this national day. #NationalBurgerDay. This is just ridiculously so funny (and entertaining)to me.
But how do you celebrate National Burger Day? Do you dress up as a burger? (I’m being silly here). Well, apparently all you need to do is eat a burger on this date. I’m down with that! I love our home made burgers; I can eat a burger on this date.
Let’s delve in deeper though. Who created the first ever burger? According to some the burger or the hamburger was created in America back in 1900 by a Danish immigrant named Louis Lassen, who owned a store in New Haven, Connecticut called “Louis’ Lunch”. Then another claim is that the giant American hamburger chain called White Castle states that the burger was created in Hamburg Germany by Otto Kuase.
Now listen to this bit of information when I started looking into when the burger made its way to Australia, I was absolutely shocked to read that by the 1880’s hamburgers were available in restaurants across the country. When I say across the country I’m talking about AUSTRALIA!#@$*& This food went wherever German settlers emigrated. So, are they telling me that WE in Australia ate burgers before the Americans?? Can this be true?? I’m not convinced that this bit of information is correct but hey let’s just go with it, I guess.
Then I found some interesting facts, listen to this. In 2011, 289 million burgers were eaten by Australians. The breakdown of it is as such – 18-24 year olds ate 28.1 million burgers whilst 46.7 million burgers were eaten by 50-59 year olds. I think my brain farted and exploded!
