Let’s head down south. As in Southern USA, to be precise we are off to Alabama y’all!
Introducing Zoitsa Homely Produce’s – Southern Fried Chicken Seasoning. This flavourful seasoning is seasoned with white peppercorns, black peppercorns, sea salt flakes, oregano, sweet paprika, cumin, cardamon, cloves, garlic powder, all spice berries, celery seed and rice flour. Then they are milled to this wonderful consistency and boy oh boy its BOOMSHAKALA bursting with so much flavour. I mill the rice as well (no pre-packaged stuff around here).
Our Southern Fried Chicken Seasoning is based on a recipe originally from Alabama so it’s as American as can be. It’s safe to say that The South IS the birthplace of American-style fried chicken. I’m sure we all agree with that right?
Let’s delve into the history of Southern Fried Chicken because if you are curious as I am it’s going to be an interesting read. All my research indicated that there has never been a single “inventor” of fried chicken. I found that there was contradictory “evidence” as many believe that the Scottish immigrants to the USA were credited with creating the recipe and then others believe that the Africans (more so West Africans) brought the recipe over from Africa. Personally, and from what I’m reading….I’m leaning more towards West Africa.
When Fried Chicken was introduced to America the slave trade who were brought over from Africa to work in southern plantations, the enslaved people, began to incorporate seasonings and spices that were not available nor used in traditional Scottish cuisine. So, for these facts there is no doubt in my mind that the West Africans used their delicious spices in the flour mixture to create its unique flavour and introduced this flavoursome seasoning.
I was fascinated to learn that the first ever recipe developed around fried chicken was published in 1747 by an English cook called Hannah Glasse. Yet fried chicken has been around for thousands of years. Yes! Thousands of years! Countries like China, the Middle East, and West Africa.
Our Southern Fried Chicken Seasoning has a lovely aroma. Its pungent but not in a bad way! Its earthy, its hot, its woody and I guess it brash. The two different types of pepper used give this seasoning a distinct flavour and its bold.
